Hygge | Denmark's secret to happiness

One of our clients told Julie about Hygge during a treatment, and we want to share it with you!

Origin of 'Hygge'

  • The term comes from a Norwegian word meaning "wellbeing"
  • First appeared in Danish writing in the 19th Century and has since evolved into the cultural idea known in Denmark today
  • Pronounced "hoo-ga"

Denmark is deemed the happiest country, and their practice of hygge may explain why. In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The Danish are great at establishing a healthy balanced lifestyle; It's very rare that their population will eat excessively one month than diet the next. They believe in treating themselves often, and taking care of their body, mind and soul harmoniously.

Denmark's weather isn't great for much of the year, so it's important for them to cultivate Hygge year round to maintain happiness. This includes cultivating a cozy, relaxing space to go home to, since most are sheltered throughout the year. Having a home that's warm and welcoming is a must, as friends come over often to socialize. Take a long bubble bath with lit candles, read a favourite novel under comfortable blankets by the fireplace, eat appetizers by dim light - whatever it may be, taking initiative in taking care of yourself is key to harnessing a healthy and happy lifestyle!
