Essential Fatty Acids + Your Skin
Healthy Fats and your Skin
Essential fatty acids, also known as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, are critical to helping your body produce healthy cells, including skin cells. They also aid in the production of sebum, which keeps your skin hydrated and looking youthful. If you're not getting enough fat, you'll experience both dryness and inflammation. You will also be more sensitive to sunlight, more prone to breakouts, and more likely to develop psoriasis.
It's important to note that EFA's have to be consumed in the right ratio for your body to get what it needs. Processed foods are full of omega-6s, and when you consume too many of these vs. enough omega-3s, inflammation runs rampant in the body. Eating too much low-quality fat, like the kind you'll find in processed foods or fried foods, can lead to an overproduction of sebum, which will cause you to breakout.
The best way to get the right ratio of these omegas into your diet is actually quite easy - natural, whole, fatty foods have them in the right proportion already.
Try adding the following into your diet:
- coconut oil
- olive oil
- organic (preferably grass-fed) butter and ghee
- nuts like almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews
- seeds like flax, hemp, sunflower, pumpkin, chia
Eating foods with a high fat content help keep you feeling full for longer. Vitamins such as A, D, E, and K require fat to be properly absorbed in our bodies as well, so adding ghee or coconut oil to your sauteed vegetables will help you get the most nutrition out of them.
Don't be afraid of these healthy fats any longer! Along with drinking enough water, consuming a healthy portion of good quality fats is the next best bet in acheiving glowing, well hydrated skin.
