The feeling of makeup can quickly become burdensome once the summer heat gets intense. We start to feel like the last thing we want on our face is layers of foundation, concealer, powder, etc. - it’s uncomfortable, tends to melt off and can even contribute to more congestion in the skin.

The key is to adjust makeup application techniques to work WITH the weather. Rather than piling on primers, powders, and full coverage products, try some of these tricks to achieve a weightless feeling and a glow that will work synergistically with your natural skincare routine.

1. Sheer out foundation for a lighter feel and more of a "tinted" effect.

How To: Take a small amount of foundation and add 1 - 3 drops of Rejuvenating + Hydrating Face Serum or Clear Skin Advanced Face Serum. Mix together and apply all over (like a moisturizer) or selectively (just where you feel you need it). Keep in mind that the fewer areas the foundation is applied to, the less upkeep! The serum will absorb and the coverage will stay on the surface, with an added glow.

2. Create a custom concealer for breakouts. It’s typically ideal to let breakouts breathe and be free of any makeup products, but this isn’t always possible or what will make us feel the best. This DIY solution offers a happy medium.

How To: Combine a drop or two of Clear Skin Advanced Spot Concentrate with a small amount of loose powder mineral foundation and mix well. Gently pat onto breakouts with a clean brush and blend out the edges. This may not fully cover, but will subdue the appearance while still contributing to healing.

3. Use skincare as a highlighter. Many highlighters can feel over the top due to their frosty finish. A more subtle but similar light-reflecting effect can be achieved by simply using skincare.

How To: Take a small amount of Protecting + Restoring Face Balm or Hydrating Rescue Balm, melt between fingers and gently pat onto the top of the cheekbone. It can also be applied under the brows, to the top of the lips, and down the bridge of the nose. Make sure to blend out edges to create a seamless finish.

4. Eliminate powder. Repeatedly layering powder in the heat can start to feel uncomfortable and cakey, plus it's a losing battle if it's humid out.

How To: Strategically blot with tissue or blotting paper in the areas that you don't want shine (side of nose, middle of forehead and chin are the usual areas). This will result in less shine but also less layers of makeup, decreasing the likelihood of congestion and breakouts.

Overall, this approach is less about perfection and more about easy finishing touches that work with the summer heat, giving you more time to enjoy the weather, and freeing you from the pressure of makeup upkeep.

Whether you choose to go lightweight and natural or stick to full coverage, conventional staples, thorough cleansing is especially important during the summer months. Use the Moisturizing Oil Cleanser + Make Up Remover to remove all eye and face makeup at the end of the day.

** Please note: The above tips work best with natural and clean makeup options, due to their lack of silicone, setting agents and long-wearing ingredients. If you have a tendency to be sensitive to makeup, make sure to pay attention to how any new products are affecting your skin. Clean and natural makeup still has the potential to cause congestion and reactions, depending on your personal skin scenario. Many retailers and brands offer samples, which can make testing new options easier.
