Meet Our Amazing Holistic Nutritionist Fran Allen

Photo Ashley Van Der Laan

While dealing with the stress of attending art school and working full time, France noticed her skin and body crying out for help. She began to connect how her lifestyle was wreaking havoc on her hormones and body. The inability to find effective solutions from conventional products drew her to find a new path in holistic skincare and health. Her approach to healing follows the ethos of slow and steady: healing is a journey. She hopes to help and inspire people to make small changes in their life for the better by nourishing their body inside and out. We love her approach to nutrition and asked her some questions to learn more about her thoughts on beauty and wellness.

Why (or how) did you become a holistic nutritionist?

I started working in restaurants when I was a teenager and have always loved working with food. I did a lot of my own personal studies in cooking, nutrition, and alternative healing modalities, so I decided to marry the two and become a certified holistic nutritionist. I loved reading Sarah Britton’s blog My New Roots and found out she studied in Toronto at The Institute of Holistic Nutrition and decided to check it out. I totally fell in love with the school and the program.

What are your favorite parts of being a nutritionist / what’s your favorite part of the job?

I love helping people. I understand how frustrating it can be to eat healthily but still not feel well. I love helping people identify roadblocks and help them achieve their best through diet and lifestyle. Giving people support and the tools to help optimize their health is truly an amazing feeling.

What is your daily skincare/beauty ritual?

Lots of massage! I hold a lot of tension around my eyes so massage has been really helpful for releasing that and improving my under eye circles. I use the Moisturizing Cleanser + Makeup Remover every day. It has changed my skin so much. It’s amazing. I also use a Custom Face Serum made by our lovely estheticians, and a moisturizer each day. I never leave my house without sunblock on my face and/or a hat. I also make sure to drink lots of water each day and eat lots of colorful plants.

What are your favorite superfoods for glowing skin?

I love fresh veggies like cucumber and celery for extra hydration and balance, bitter greens for digestion and minerals, Lemons for cleansing and alkalizing, healthy fats like coconut butter, olive oil and tahini for soft skin, pink salt and seaweeds for minerals and balance.

What do you eat to get past the 3:00 pm slump?

Drinking a big glass of lemon water, having an herbal tea, a short walk or meditation, a snack with lots of healthy fat, the yogic Breath Of Fire works really well too.

What can you find in your pantry for a DIY skincare recipe?

Raw honey, it goes in all of my masks. I also love adding matcha, amla powder, avocado or yogurt to the Regenerating + Stimulating Exfoliator.

If you weren’t a nutritionist, what would you be doing?

I would probably be cooking, becoming an herbalist or ceramicist or florist. I love working with my hands in nature and feel really grounded when I get to. It’s such a meditative practice and fills me with so much joy.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Write it down. I’m someone who goes a mile a minute and can get distracted/inspired easily. I find writing down my thoughts helps me slow down and prioritize my thoughts.

What do you think is the biggest detox myth?

I don’t really believe in full blown and extreme detoxes. I prefer to offer the body support instead. I think a lot of times extreme detoxes can really stress the body and end up having adverse effects. I’ve experimented and done so many before and some of them have taken me months to recover from. Never again!

I believe more in offering the body support and a more restorative approach to healing. I like to keep things gentle and consistent. The extreme energy of traditional diets and detoxes sometimes causes a lot of stress. That can lead to a disordered approach to food and contributes to a lot of isolation and anxiety. I think the biggest thing people need to detox from is negative self-talk! Being kind to yourself does way more for your overall health than any detox can offer.

If you could travel anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go and why?

Japan! I went there a few years ago with a close friend and had the best time! I love the food and the culture and just really enjoyed getting lost in Tokyo. I can’t wait to go back again, it’s absolutely beautiful. I would also love to go to the Pacific Northwest and visit. I love California but haven’t been to Portland, Seattle or Vancouver. The ocean and beautiful natural landscape is just pure magic.
