The Top 3 Summer Clay Mask Recipes

There’s a lot to love about summer but congested, oily skin is not one of them. Our Detoxifying + Clarifying Clay Mask is an aesthetician-favourite during these hot months because of it’s powerful rejuvenating ingredients and customizable dry formula.

We asked Janal from The Hive Spa, and Julie + Cassandra from PA why they love using the Clay Mask in facials + to share their favourite mask recipes.

Our Clay mask features a blend of dry, biodegradable ingredients that benefit all skin types. Bentonite clay is rich in minerals, clarifying pores and reducing inflammation. It is widely known for it's highly absorptive properties, which makes it a great detoxifying ingredient. Rhassoul clay is high in Silica, Magnesium, Iron, Calcium and Potassium. Quebec maple syrup mineralizes the skin and neutralizes free radicals, giving your skin a healthy glow and smooth tone.

When combined with a liquid, the mask is activated and can then be applied to your skin. At home you can easily mix the mask with just water. In a small bowl combine 2 tsp of dry clay mask with 1- 2 tsp water. Mix into a runny paste. Apply an even layer of the mask to face, neck, and décolleté. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, until mask is almost dry. Gently wipe off with a damp cloth.

I love mixing spirulina into our Detoxifying + Clarifying Clay Mask; it enhances the amazing detoxifying benefits already present in our mask. Spirulina has impressive anti-inflammatory qualities, providing an instant cooling effect when applied topically to the skin. I also like to add a couple pumps of our Revitalizing + Nourishing Moisturizer, for added hydration and a super creamy texture. This mask will alleviate redness, calm irritations, cleanse + tone the skin for a squeaky clean glow!

In a treatment, I use about 1 tbsp of clay mask with ½ tsp of spirulina powder. I mix the powders together then add in a couple pumps of moisturizer, and enough water to form a creamy liquid/paste. I apply it to the skin and leave on for 5-10 minutes, spraying the skin with our Invigorating + Balancing Toner halfway through if I notice the mask starts to dry.

I love our Detoxifying + Clarifying Clay Mask! I formulated it in a way that it works for all skin types, and can easily be customized, depending on the seasons and your needs. Right now my favourite blend would be: clay, honey and strawberry puree.

Strawberries have just started popping up at farmers markets and I can’t get enough of them! Strawberries has amazing benefits for the skin. They contain high concentrates of alpha-hydroxyl acid, which help to clear away dead skin cells, lighten blemishes, reduce the appearance of pimple scars, brighten your skin tone, deep-cleanse your pores, and eliminate excess oil. Strawberries also contain salicylic acid, which works to clear away dead cells, reducing the appearance of blackheads. Honey is naturally antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial, making it an effective, natural way to fight acne + blemishes. Honey has the unique ability to retain the skin’s moisture as well as absorb the pores’ impurities, working to cleanse and gently exfoliate your pores.

Add 1 tsp of strawberry puree and 1 tsp honey to 1 tbs clay mask and 2 tsp water. Add more strawberries or water to make it thinner. Apply a thin layer and leave on for 10 mins. Follow with our toner and serum and our Natural Facelift Ritual. Your skin will be glowing and soft!

The Detoxifying + Clarifying Clay Mask is a personal favourite of mine. Working in the harsh climates of Ontario cottage country weather- I try to focus my attention on protecting and replenishing the skin with antioxidants and vitamins. In the hot summer weather your skin’s natural sebum production increases- leaving some people feeling quite oily.

My go-to is mixing the clay mask with cooled, steeped green tea- a powerful and familiar ingredient that is known for its antioxidant properties. It helps fight free radical damage from the harsh (but lovely) summer sun, soothes the skin, and promotes healing, while the clay pulls impurities and tightens pores.

The Hive Spa uses all of Province Apothecary’s skincare products in their treatments. We spoke with Janal about why she loves using PA and holistic skincare:

I've been working as a certified aesthetician for the last 4 years. During those years I've definitely done my share of moving around, and in so have been exposed to many different styles and beliefs when it comes to skin care. Quite honestly, I used to struggle personally using many of the products that I was supposed to be promoting to my clients. My heart just wasn't in it, and I left the problem areas on my skin untreated simply due to lack of enthusiasm. Each spa did bring me a little closer to where I'm supposed to be, and I'm thankful for that. It was just under 3 years ago that I was first introduced to the idea of natural skin care and I finally felt motivated again.

Everyone deserves to make self-care a priority - period. But life is busy. Its filled with hard work, responsibilities, and commitments. And most often- our time and energy is preoccupied. With all the chaos, many of us are guilty of a little self neglect. It happens. Physically, we all know very well how to take care of our bodies in terms of eating right and exercising, but the repercussions of what we apply topically lack attention, and that's what I love to educate people on.

Province Apothecary reflects the brilliance of simplicity. Which for me, is something to strive for in all aspects. Getting back to basics. Natural, effective ingredients our bodies can recognize and utilize properly. Giving your body a chance to use the ingredients you’re putting on it instead of focusing on what to do with the foreign substances it can not recognize.
