What is Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture and how can it help me?

Facial Rejuvenation or “Cosmetic” Acupuncture is a growing trend among Torontonians. Many people are searching for natural anti-aging therapies, as Botox and fillers are expensive, contain harsh chemicals, and have to be continuously maintained. Acupuncture is a safe and natural way to effectively improve skin tone, elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve complexion without the chemicals. It also has the added bonus of being covered by extended health benefits. Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? Well it’s not. And it gets better!

Facial acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, hair-like needles into the face and body. This process increases blood flow to the face, helps to shed dead skin cells, and can boost collagen production. It also reduces tension in the muscles of the forehead and jaw. The needles stimulate the flow of energy to the face and body, and can also help with headaches, digestion, anxiety, stress reduction, as well as an improve mood. When it comes to skin care, facial acupuncture can also be used to treat many other dermatological concerns such as dry skin, acne, scarring, rosacea, dull complexion, and eczema.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I emphasize the importance of ‘whole body’ health on a daily basis. It isn’t enough to look at one part of the body and try to fix something without knowing the rest of the story. One of my favorite things to treat is the skin. It shields us, grows with us, and needs to breathe, just like we do. When we see changes to the skin, it is usually an outward reflection of what is going on inside the body. For example, asthma and allergies as a child often pairs with a history of eczema, an allergic response on the surface of the skin. This surface rash is the body’s reaction to allergies at a deeper level, possibly to the foods we eat. Acne is also an indication that something isn’t quite right, either on a hormonal level or in combination with other inflammatory changes. We can work with you to address your dermatological concerns, while also looking at your overall health to treat the whole picture. Needling the face can reduce new acne lesions and help treat scarring from old ones as we increase cell turnover and blood flow to those areas. We also needle the body to help balance hormones and stress levels overall. While receiving treatment, we can also teach you about herbs and nutrition to help balance hormones, speed healing, and reduce inflammation.
