We love the positive message of love and community that beauty expert, makeup artist and HERDAY series founder Temi Shobowale spreads. She founded HERDAY to provide a safe space for diverse groups of women to feel uplifted, spiritually strengthened in a fast paced city and lifestyle. The Toronto events offer an unique, necessary space and we wanted to learn more about Temi's personal practices and how she maintains balance in her everyday (busy) life.
What's your favourite self care ritual?
I set the mood beginning with burning my favourite incense Nag Chandan followed by my body care routine and a face mask. I make my own skin / body care products & sometimes teach d.i.y. workshops on how to create and personalize your own products - I use my TEMIMARIE coffee scrub followed by my whipped body butter in my signature lemongrass scent as a part of my self care ritual. Something about the scent of lemongrass helps keeps me grounded and uplifted at the same time. Then I begin to write out my mantras and desires while listening to some sanskrit mantras (it helps cleanse my mind) while smudging myself and my entire apartment with sage followed by a guided meditation.
Name a book you are obsessed with right now
“Coyotes” by Tania Perlata. - a collection of short stories and free verse poetry that explores illegal immigration and the long lasting effects of trauma through the eyes of the author as a five year old.
How do you ground yourself (during the day)?
I give myself a 30 minutes - 1 hour mandatory break - a mental nap I like to call it. Phone on silent. Laptop off. I meditate in silence and allow myself to feel all the emotions I need to feel then I return to my regularly scheduled program.
What's the best advice you've ever received?
“Work even harder after those first few accomplishments, continue to aim higher.”
I would love to travel the Amalfi Coast in Italy. It looks so beautiful and relaxing plus I have an obsession with the italian culture and how life is of ease to them compared to the north american GO! GO! GO! Lifestyle. I am also a history buff so I would visit Naples, Rome and Florence while in Italy.
What’s the most useful business lesson you’ve learned?
As cliche as it sounds “Do not mix friendship with business.” Boundaries begin to fade, business meetings become social calls, and in the process of trying to salvage both you become very passive aggressive.
What piece of advice would you like to offer to other women?
It is essential to keep a close-knitted circle of girlfriends. Remember not to fixate on one another's flaws, none of us are perfect or else this will the first step to the point of no return.
Who is your business inspiration?
My very good friend and mentor - Solange Ashoori @solangel416 (Lash Guru of Toronto). She is intelligent, hard-working, brutally honest, compassionate, ethical, humble and genuine. A true BOSS BABE.
What are your top 3 favourite natural make-up products?
Hourglass VANISH™ SEAMLESS FINISH FOUNDATION STICK (VEGAN)
Ecobrow - Eyebrow Defining wax (VEGAN)
BITE BEAUTY “Cocoa” Multistick (VEGAN & CANADIAN)
