Our Women We Admire series is our way of supporting and sharing the stories of incredible women whose values match ours. Today, meet Hallie Gould & Julia Reid, the Co-Founders of tuck.
Tell us about yourselves. What do you do?Julia: I’m the President and co-founder of tuck. I wear many hats in the company, from sales to operations, to accounting, and more. It’s been an incredible learning experience and a complete departure from my former career in finance.
Hallie: I’m the co-founder of tuck and work on all things brand-related. It’s been so exciting to see the brand grow from an idea. And very cool to have customers and other brand owners respond positively to everything we’re putting out into the world.
What made you feel passionate about bedding?Julia: As far as I can remember, I’ve always had a thing for bedding. I think in part because it’s where I feel safe and secure. At the end of the day, there is nothing better than getting into bed, so why not make it the best bed possible?
Hallie: I LOVE my bed - it’s always been very important to me to have a cozy and inviting place to sleep. Julia, however, is the true bedding connoisseur. She’s always had a serious love for bedding and knows so much about materials, functionality, and what’s happening in the bedding space.
What motivates you?
Julia: Every small win we have motivates me to keep going and believe in what we’re building. As an entrepreneur, you’re going to face so many challenges that will make it feel hard to get back up again, so it’s important to focus on how far you’ve come.Hallie: I love seeing brands and products come to life. So for me, I’m motivated by collaboration and growth. Getting to work with passionate, creative, smart, and fun people makes work exciting.
What’s it like working with your friend? Would you recommend it to others?Julia: Working with Hallie has been wonderful. We have complementary skill sets and I trust her judgment entirely. Having said that, working with a friend is not something to jump into without a fulsome discussion (and maybe some paperwork) about your business relationship and how it will be distinct from your friendship.
Hallie: Yes! I love working with Julia. We are very much on the same page, which is very important. Every conversation sparks creativity and enthusiasm about whatever we need to accomplish.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve learned from your industry?Julia: I would say that everything takes longer than you think it’s going to, which can be frustrating at times. Understanding that and having patience is a key part of the entrepreneurial journey.
Hallie: In almost all my jobs, the throughline is: things change no matter how organized you are. Sometimes things won’t work the way you want, but these changes often breed new ideas or present new opportunities.
Do you have any tips and tricks for making the bed?Julia: Peel back the sheets and the duvet and throw your pillows off to the side. I find it easier to start fresh.
Hallie: Enlist help. It’s so much quicker with two sets of hands.
What are your greatest accomplishments?Hallie: I’ve gone through a big mindset shift around my priorities over the past few years. I’m pleased to say that I’m so happy with where I’ve landed.
What does it mean to you to be female entrepreneurs?
Hallie: Every day, we connect with another amazing woman doing their own thing. I find it so inspiring and motivating. It’s an ever-growing community that I'm proud to be a small part of.
